California legislators voted this week to move forward a bill (SB 24) that will force every state-run university campus to dispense chemical abortion drugs. A chemical abortion is a cocktail of drugs used to kill unborn babies up to the tenth week of pregnancy. The first drug (mifepristone) is a steroidal hormone blocker that makes the uterus unable to nurture a developing child. A second drug (misopristol) is a powerful ulcer drug that is used to induce labor. The result is the often agonizing delivery of a small—but fully formed—baby.
I attended a hearing on SB 24 at the State Capital on Wednesday to register Life Legal’s strong opposition to this dangerous legislation. The bill was heard before the Senate Health Committee, which is responsible for addressing state public health concerns.
Pro-abortion legislators touted chemical abortions as “safe,” even though Life Legal’s research shows that thousands of women have suffered severe, sometimes life-threatening, complications and over 100 women have died after using the drugs. It is estimated that 322 chemical abortions will be provided across the state university system every month once SB 24 is passed.
Life Legal is very concerned about this bill. Not only will SB 24 make our university system complicit in the extermination of thousands of babies every year, but the bill does not include any conscience protections for health care workers who do not want to dispense chemical abortion drugs. I was especially troubled that conscience rights were not even mentioned at yesterday’s hearing. The Guttmacher Institute—Planned Parenthood’s research arm and the source of misleading statistics on the alleged safety of chemical abortions—says that conscience protections “pose serious dangers for individuals and society.” But then Planned Parenthood finds all constitutional provisions that protect preborn life to be dangerous!
The bill was passed out of the Senate Health Committee by a vote of 6 to 2 along party lines. The Committee’s two Republicans voiced concerns about the bill, but were ultimately told by Democrat Holly Mitchell, “If you don’t like abortion, don’t have one.” Of course, this is ludicrous—much like saying “If you don’t like slavery, don’t buy a slave.” The state has an obligation to protect its citizens from harms imposed by others. Unfortunately, California Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the bill.
Life Legal is prepared to protect the rights of university health care workers for whom dispensing abortion drugs is a violation of conscience. We are currently working with student organizations to ensure that students and campus clinic staff will not be forced to comply with this egregious law.
The mission of Life Legal Defense Foundation (LLDF) is to give innocent and helpless human beings of any age, particularly unborn children, a trained and committed defense against the threat of death, and to support their advocates in the nation’s courtrooms. LLDF will accomplish its mission and purpose through the law and education.
