On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith of South Carolina strapped her two children into their car seats in her Mazda Protégé and proceeded to release the car down a ramp into John D. Long Lake. Alex was 14 months and Michael was 3 years old. She then reported the car had been hijacked with the children in it and a manhunt ensued. On November 2, 1994 she pleaded with the hijackers on live TV to return Alex and Michael and then on November 3rd finally admitted to killing her children. The next day the children were found, still buckled in their seats in the car at the bottom of the lake. One of the divers, Steve Morrow, said there was a small hand against a window pane and the car seats were dangling upside down.
At the time there was intense media coverage and an outpouring of public sympathy for these children. I could not help but imagine the two children in the backseat. Were they awake? Were they scared when they realized there was no adult with them? Were they alive when the water started filling the car? Did they cry? Did they scream for their mother? Did they struggle in their car seats?
Children whose lives are ended thru abortion are in a similar circumstance. They are trapped, there is no one to stop what’s happening, and their last moments are traumatic. Dr. Anthony Levatino, a former abortionist, has created several educational videos* (animated drawings) to describe the abortion process. Dr. Levatino early in his career had completed 1200 abortions but later had a conversion – prompted by circumstances in his personal life – and decided never to perform another abortion. His description of the various abortion methods is very clinical and straightforward. I’d like to think that if people actually were educated about abortion from a medical standpoint it would make them pause and reflect on how violently life is being destroyed, regardless of its legality.
Politicians may defend and applaud a woman’s right to choose, but the victim of abortion deserves equal consideration. We cannot ignore the fact that there is a child undergoing severe stress to allow for the predicted outcome of two heartbeats going into an abortion practice but only one coming out. There are those that say the child is not aware of anything, so that makes the vacuums and curettes OK. How cold-hearted is that? And what degree of confidence do we have in that statement when considering a more fully developed child will receive a needle with a lethal dose of digoxin applied to her heart, torso or head to cause fatal cardiac arrest before surgically disassembling her body. Dr. Colleen Malloy, MD, a board certified Neonatologist and Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2012 stated that at 20-week gestation a child’s pain receptors are present and linked.
Should the Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade decision be codified as is the mission of the Biden/Harris ticket** state restrictions on abortion would in theory be nullified. This may not come to pass if the states challenge the federal government through the legal system. But the fact that politicians who champion unrestricted abortion never mention the child in the equation is disturbing. By taking the time to view Dr. Levatino’s videos, we will have a better understanding of what a baby experiences during an abortion and also the effects that abortion may have on the child’s mother. Shouldn’t we at least understand both sides of the story before pulling that lever or completing our ballot? Knowledge is power….and silence is approval.
We will never know what the Smith children experienced in their last moments in the back of that car but we can imagine it was terrifying. Are we as a country any better than Susan Smith if we refuse to acknowledge the horror of a child’s death at the hands of an abortionist?
