A Voice Cried Out, “Don’t Kill Your Baby”

Most in the pro-life movement are too young to remember many of our pro-life pioneers who paved the way for future pro-life warriors.  One of these women was Bea Gutherman, a mother of 11 children who was faithfully committed to praying and sidewalk counseling outside the Northeast Women’s Center abortion mill which at that time was located at 9600 Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philly.

Below is a memory of Bea from another of our pro-life pioneers, Theresa Connolly, one of our lawyers who worked pro bono whenever any of us were arrested (which in the 80’s was frequent).  God bless Bea, Theresa and all who stood up then and who stand up now for God’s precious little ones.

Bea Gutherman
Bea Gutherman

It was early in the 1980’s on a cold, dreary morning in Philadelphia, a young woman was headed for 9600 Roosevelt Boulevard.  She was going down the walkway as Bea, a middle-aged woman made a blood curdling scream: ‘’DON’T KILL YOUR BABY.”

It was horrifying! The small prolife group was shocked at how rude she was to this woman who was about to abort her baby. Yes, shocked!

Someone was incredibly wrong; but it was not Bea.

In 1973 seven dirty old men pronounced the murder of unseen human children to be a woman’s right to abort. *

How were we supposed to behave?  Bea knew.  Bea did it.

Groups formed outside ‘9600’ daily.  They were always polite.  Their weapon was the rosary.  And that weapon worked!

Some mothers left.  Some children lived.

*Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. It struck down many U.S. state and federal abortion laws. – Wikipedia

Angels Have Red Hair

This article, by the late, great Joseph Wall is one of our annual posts at Christmastime.   It first appeared in the Nov/Dec 1996 issue of the American Life League’s Celebrate Life Magazine. The Northeast Women’s Center was at that time located at 9600 Roosevelt Blvd. Through the efforts of the NE Philadelphia Pro-Life Coalition, they lost their lease and were forced to move a few miles up the road to Comly Road and Roosevelt Boulevard.  It is now a Planned Parenthood facility and pro-life activists remain ever vigilant in their constant witness outside this killing center.

Red hair angel
By Joseph Wall

WHADDAYA TALKING ABOUT? Angels have red hair? What kind of nonsense is this? Explain yourself?

Patience, dear reader. There is logic here. There is also a charming (and true) little tale behind it.

There was, and alas still is, in our city an abortion clinic, the Northeast Women’s Center. Since its opening in the mid-1970’s it has been picketed regularly by neighborhood pro-life people. We have conducted prayer vigils, sidewalk counseling and, in later years, occasional rescues.

One of our activities was a visit to the clinic on Christmas morning. Incidentally, the clinic closed for only two holidays during the year – Christmas and Yom Kippur! The purpose of our pilgrimage on Christmas day was to offer a kind of present to all the little ones who had died there during the preceding year. Our present was a simple one: A few of us would kneel on the sidewalk outside the front door of the multipurpose building housing the abortion clinic. We would pray the Rosary for God’s precious infants who had been put to death there since the previous Christmas. Then we would place a present; a doll, or a teddy bear in holiday wrappings, inside the vestibule of the building, in front of the elevator to the third floor – the clinic floor.

When the clinic personnel arrived the next morning, they would see this present with its gift tag and would know that at least some people cared for the little babies they had killed. More important, we hoped and believed that the babies themselves would know that there are those who loved them enough to help them celebrate on earth what they were celebrating in heaven; the birthday of the baby Jesus.

And so it was that on a cold, rainy Christmas morning a dozen years ago, a handful of pro-lifers; Stephanie Morello, Kathy Long, Susan Silcox, Patricia Dowling and myself, made our way to the Northeast Women’s Center abortion clinic. We knelt in prayer, saying the Holy Rosary for the 4,000 babies whose lives were so abruptly terminated there since the last Christmas. Having completed our prayers, we went to the front door with the intention of opening it and placing our gift for the unborn babies inside, out of the rain; alas, it was locked! All the other doors to the building were locked as well. What to do? We did not want to leave our gift on the walkway outside, where it would become sodden with rain; a soggy mess would be a poor gift for these little ones. And it would be the only gift they would ever get.

As we stood there trying to figure out what to do, a young man with bright red hair came up the walk from the parking lot. When he saw us, he asked what our problem was. We explained our dilemma. “Oh”, he said, “I have keys to the door.” With that, he proceeded to unlock the door and let us into the vestibule. We laid the Christmas present for our pre-born brothers and sisters in front of the elevator and turned to thank him. That quickly, he had vanished. We never saw him again.

Now you, dear reader, can believe what you wish about this; that it was happenstance, simply a coincidence, whatever. Personally, I believe that the Good Lord, seeing our confusion, sent one of His red-haired angels to bail us out.

Incidentally, this is not the only case of a red-haired angel going about the world doing the Lord’s work. I know of another one…but, then, that’s another story!

Save the Date! Philly March for Life 2021 to be Held on January 23rd

Below is information from Ted Meehan on the March for Life in Philadelphia on Saturday, January 23, 2021.  Save the date and look for more information on the flyer below and on the Pro-Life Union’s website.

Philly March for Life

The annual witness of the March for Life continues again this year, despite the Covid, and lockdowns, and weather, and masks.

For those who are planning to March in Washington, that event will be in January 29. Details can be found on the March for Life website. Locally there will be a March in Philadelphia on January 23 (see Flyer below). Every major Pro-Life organization in our area is supporting this effort. The Archbishop will open our witness with Mass at the Cathedral at 9am. Afterward, we will process to Independence Park, with a stop at 8th & Appletree. We will conclude with a Rally at Independence Park featuring a number of very prominent pro-life speakers.

Please spread the word for this event in your Churches, your Pro-Life committees, among friends and family who may be less active than you – and among local schools and students. Feel free to make copies of the Flyer to distribute among friends and friendly places.

Let this effort begin a renewed start to protect and defend the sanctity of life!

Pro-Life Witness Saves Another Baby!

Below is from an email we received from Mary Paris, one of our committed sidewalk servants at the Planned Parenthood in Warminster.  While we are in the midst of some serious challenges this year, babies are still being saved from abortion.  Thank you Mike, Pat, Ellen and Mary for your faithfulness each week at this killing facility.  And thanks to all  who are so faithful in your commitment to be a Voice for Life!

IMG_2063

I thought I should pass on to you since you are so wonderful at keeping vigils going down at Warminster PP that on Friday a young girl (senior in high school) and her mother left PP and decided to save the baby.  Pat Stanton and Mike McMonagle had spoken out to them earlier before they went in and it was after they were gone that the two stopped near me and asked for resources.  I directed them to the parking lot where I park and Ellen Doherty (from A Baby’s Breath) and I spoke with them.  The girl’s face was beaming.  The mom was ashamed that they had even gone there in the first place.  Interesting thing is that this is the second time in a couple months where I was getting a little burnt out and was given the nudge to keep up the work.

Thanks for all your encouragement for folks to come out and pray.

Please Join Our Annual Prayer Rally Outside of Planned Parenthood in Warminster, Pennsylvania on January 22nd

Public WitnessIn the past we have held our Pray Rally the same day as the annual March for Life in Washington, DC.  This year we have decided to have this rally on the actual anniversary of the Supreme Court decision declaring abortion lawful throughout the nation.

We will pray for the over 60,000,000 babies killed since this decision.  We will also pray for those who procure, provide or promote the killing of our preborn brothers and sisters.

Prayer is the most important weapon we have to combat the evils in our society; and prayer vigils outside of abortion facilities combine this powerful weapon with our witness to the crimes against humanity taking place in our communities every day.

Whether you are planning on attending the March for Life in Washington, DC this year or not, please consider coming out to pray with us and give witness to the horrible sin of abortion this January 22nd.

We will gather outside of Planned Parenthood on Louis Drive at 12 noon.

Signs will be provided.

CDC Guidelines will be observed.

Please print out and distribute the flyer below. Hope to see many of you then.

This event is sponsored by the Bucks County Pro-Life Coalition

2021 Rally for Life

Action Needed on The NJ Freedom to Kill Act (S3030/A4848)

Below is information from New Jersey Right to Life on the Freedom to Kill Act and and update on the November 11th and December 2nd  Day of Outrage Protests.  If you live in New Jersey, please take the actions requested.  Please note the Day of Outrage Peaceful Protest which takes place tomorrow and Thursday.  See below for more information.

We thank those who attended our November 11th and December 2nd  Day of Outrage Protests and for acting on our December 4th Alert to ensure that the NJ Freedom to Kill Act (S3030/A4848) was not added to the agenda for the Senate Health Committee hearing.  We had a very good turn-out at the past two protests and received a lot of favorable feedback from the public and even got some favorable press coverage!  We are planning a couple of additional events this month and in January which are included in this email.

We have been working non-stop; participating in webinars, interviews with media, writing op-eds, and collaborating with several pro-life groups to defeat this horrible bill.   We are continuing to monitor the legislative schedule and will keep you informed of any new movement on the bill.  In the meantime, I wanted to encourage you to continue to take the following action on S3030/A4848 and ask you to mark your calendars for some upcoming events.

The Following Action is Still Needed

Important:  We are hearing that legislators’ phones are either busy, not answered, or their voicemail boxes are full which prevents us from speaking to a live person or leaving a message so we are urging you to also email and send letters via postal mail so that they can’t say they didn’t get your message! Please do this even if you a have contacted your legislators before. We know this will take extra time, especially during the holiday season, but we ask that you take a few minutes while writing out your Christmas cards to write a letter to these legislators on behalf of babies in the womb who have no voice.

Please take the following action, then share this information with 10 friends and ask them to take action and then share it with 10 more friends and ask them to do the same.

1.  Please email, call and mail letters via postal mail to your State Senator and two Assembly members to oppose the bill.  Please send any response you receive to us at feedback@njrtl.org

You can get more information on S3030/A4848 and Take Action HERE

2.  Also call, email and mail letters via postal mail to Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin urging them NOT to post S3030/A4848  Their address and phone numbers are listed below.  Please send copies of any response you receive to us at feedback@njrtl.org.

Blessing Bag Stuffing to Support Sidewalk Counseling in Waco, Texas

Sidewalk counselors in Waco, Texas received ‘blessing bags’ to offer to women entering the Planned Parenthood in Waco, Texas prepared by Republican County Women last month .  Please see report from John Pisciotta of Pro-Life Waco below.

Under the leadership of Ellen Stanizewski, an important feature of sidewalk counseling at Planned Parenthood Waco is offering Blessing Bags to women as they drive or ride in. The Blessing Bags include a small stuffed animal, small gifts, fliers on life matters, and directions to Care Net Pregnancy Center and other support.

Abortion-minded moms and other clients have taken over 1,000 Blessing Bags. The photos are of morning gathering on November 13 to assemble 250 Blessing Bags to take us into 2021. The location was the headquarters of the Republican Party of McLennan County. Republican County Women provided most of the person-power for this productive and joyful morning.
