Dear Bishops: Be Lions for Christ

The following is from an email blast sent out by Judie Brown of the American Life League. Please see information on how you can encourage your bishop to be bold and take a stand against public servants who dismiss Catholic teachings while in public office.

The ongoing hypocrisy of pro-abortion Catholics like Joe Biden continues to boggle the Catholic mind. It is hard for any of us to understand how any thinking human being who claims to be Catholic could be such a voracious supporter of aborting little babies! Yet that is exactly what Biden and his ilk are up to on a daily basis.

On the other hand, we have the American Catholic bishops who are all atwitter with the coronavirus, shutting down churches and encouraging Catholics to use at-home resources including online Mass. Baltimore’s Archbishop Lori told the media: “We do not feel as though we have been forced into doing this by the government. We feel like we’re doing the right thing.”

Yet, when it comes to pro-abortion Catholics like Biden and Pelosi spreading a virus of disdain for preborn babies—a “virus” that surgically kills more than 2,000 individual human beings daily—the bishops only resort to occasional criticism. They have never taken steps as a united body to deny Biden the sacrament of Holy Eucharist.

In fact, the entire cast of characters known as the USCCB has never acted to deny any pro-abortion Catholic public figure the body of Christ!

Somehow it seems easier for bishops to shut the doors of the Church to faithful Catholics than to defend Christ from sacrilege.

We know that Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is real. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “the Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’” It further explains:

The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as “the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend.” In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist “the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.” “This presence is called ‘real’ – by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be ‘real’ too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present.”

Knowing the truth of these words and knowing the devotion that such a teaching should command, we are speechless to explain why the bishops are silent. It would seem to us that, just like the young boy Saint Tarsicius, our bishops would prefer death over permitting any sacrilege to befall Christ in the Eucharist.

But first, faith must exist. And it must be a faith in the real presence of Christ.

Fr. John Hardon, S.J., a holy priest who brought many to the Church and back to the Church, taught this about the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist: “Only those who really believe that God became man can even begin to believe in His Real Presence now on earth in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Thus, faith in the Incarnation is the foundation for our faith in the Real Presence. As a result, growth in our faith in the Incarnation is the condition for growth in our faith in the Real Presence.”

Joe Biden has said that “no one is expendable. No life is worth losing,” yet he condones the act of aborting a baby.

The bishops have said, in joint statements and with a single voice, that “abortion ends the life of a child and offends God.” Yet they are silent when it comes to defending Christ from sacrilege.

This dichotomy is a tragedy. We call upon the bishops, and we ask you to do likewise. Let them know that, as ordained men of God, they are obliged to defend the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist in the same way they defend the real presence of the child prior to birth.

Let us remind them, one by one, that “only those who really believe that God became man can even begin to believe in His Real Presence now on earth in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.”

The Catholic bishops are obliged to teach, not tremble, especially in times like these.

Dear Bishops, be lions for Christ.

Good Shepherds, Rise Up! Speak Out Against Abortion

A recent post on our blog shared a study that is appalling. It shared the percentage of sermons and homilies that focus on the issue of abortion.

Is it any coincidence that this study is shared on readings that speak volumes on Good Shepherd Sunday? The last line of John’s Gospel in today’s gospel for this Sunday says it all: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Our culture needs more members of the clergy to be vocal in the defense of human life.

To members of the clergy, the time to appease your flock is over. It is time to be bold. It is time to overcome the fear of living out your call to spread the gospel with truth, love, and mercy.

Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life has excellent sources on how to do so. Here is a collection of homilies Purchase his book, Proclaiming the Message of Life: Weekly Reflections from the Lectionary, here.

Abortion Clinics Remain Open During COVID-19, While I Was Arrested for Praying Outside of One

The following is a blogpost on Alliance Defending Freedom from David Benham who is sharing about his arrest outside of an abortion facility in North Carolina.

I still remember the night.

I was 15 years old when Norma McCorvey came walking through our front door with her then-partner, Connie Gonzales. The fact that we were hosting guests for dinner wasn’t unique. We were preacher’s kids, so our door was basically always revolving.

But this night was different. On this night, God was doing something amazing—something only He could do.

Legacy of Life

The woman that my family affectionately knew as “Ms. Norma” is more widely known by her pseudonym, “Jane Roe.” Norma McCorvey was the “Roe” of the infamous U.S. Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States. Through the faithful witness of my dad, Norma met Jesus. Several weeks later Norma was baptized, and Jason and I helped move her stuff out of Connie’s house.

Norma wasn’t the exception. We regularly witnessed the Gospel pervade the darkness of those affected by abortion. My dad committed himself to standing for the unborn as a full-time ministry, and this commitment was a family affair.

Our dad’s vigor for life was contagious. From a young age, he instilled in us that defending the defenseless wasn’t just a duty, it was an honor. He told us that if our theology wasn’t our biography, then our theology was worthless—because Jesus cared for the “least of these,” so must we.

Leverage for Life

After retiring from professional baseball, Jason and I moved to Charlotte and immediately noticed two things:

  1. There were three thriving abortion clinics.
  2. There was a desperate need for a network of life-affirming organizations.

As our business continued to grow, the Lord made it clear He wanted us to leverage our influence and resources to mobilize Christians to stand up for life. We didn’t know exactly what this would look like, but we knew that we had been called for such a time as this.

In 2010, we joined hands with business owners and local churches and started a non-profit called Cities4Life. We were driven by the vision that true compassion always leads to action. We didn’t want to just stand against abortion, we wanted to embody the life-giving actions of the Good Samaritan.

Practically, this looks like reaching down into a place of pain, tending to any wounds, taking them to an inn, and providing intentional follow up. Vulnerable women visiting abortion clinics need the warmth and love of Jesus regardless of whether they are walking in or out of that place.

Since 2010, we’ve had the privilege of serving over 5,000 women. But in ten years, we never encountered anything like we experienced earlier this month.

Locked up for Life

On Saturday, April 4, 2020, I was standing on a public sidewalk outside an abortion clinic here in Charlotte when I was unlawfully arrested.

Earlier that morning, I had received a call saying that the police were threatening to arrest our sidewalk counselors from Cities4Life. The police claimed that we were in violation of the “shelter-in-place” ordinance put in place in response to COVID-19.

I knew immediately that the authorities had no grounds for an arrest. Because we’re a federally recognized 501(c)3 that provides life-affirming social services to women in crisis, our services are classified “essential” under the ordinance. So we had a legal and constitutional right to be there. And on top of that, as an “essential” service, we could have been there with more than ten people. Out of concern for our sidewalk counselors and our community, however, we stayed under ten in number, maintaining social distancing the entire time.

I respectfully explained all of this to the officer, but to no avail.

As they cuffed me, I couldn’t help but recall the countless hours that I watched my dad standing on similar sidewalks, proclaiming life in the midst of death. It was a surreal experience, to say the least. Only two hours earlier, I had been sitting on my couch, Bible and coffee in hand, getting ready for a day with the family. Now those same hands were pressed behind my back going numb from the tight grasp of the cuffs.

I am grieved that our local government is employing the coronavirus as an illegitimate excuse to silence the voices of pro-life people. This is nothing less than viewpoint discrimination. Abortion clinics are flooded with people receiving so-called “essential” services, while peaceful counselors are arrested for offering truly essential services.

That’s why, with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, we filed a lawsuit against the City of Charlotte. If abortion clinics can stay open during the pandemic, Christians should be allowed to pray outside—particularly those abiding by health and safety guidelines.

Today, we continue to partner with numerous ministries and local churches to help bring mothers to a place of hope and healing. Opposition will not dissuade us in this fight. In fact, we are invigorated all the more to be a voice for the voiceless. We pray you’ll join us!

Translating the Gospel of Life into the culture

The following is from Tom Stevens, CEO and President of the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia.

The last time I led the monthly Bible Study that I do for the ladies at Guiding Star Ministries Home for Single Pregnant Moms and Children, I made a handout.  It included an artistic graphic I made with a scripture verse on it.   It happened to be Ash Wednesday … so I used a simple translation of Mark 1:15, “He said, “The right time is now here.  God’s kingdom is very near. Change your hearts and lives, and believe the Good News!”  To make it attractive to the ladies I put flowers, a heart, and a butterfly on the image.

Why?  Why are we trying to translate the Gospel of Life into something that might be relevant and attractive to residents of a maternity home, or to customers at an abortion center, or anywhere we go?  Because the Good News of the Gospel of Life changes hearts and minds when and if received. Then it changes decisions, actions, and behaviors.  Heart, mind, and behavior change is required to bring an end to abortion, euthanasia, and every attack on the Sanctity of Life. It’s up to us to do our best to bring the Gospel of Life to the culture.

How can we best translate the Gospel of Life to reach the “unreachable”?  To reach an urban culture where sex is without boundaries or covenant and single moms having babies sometimes is worn as a badge of honor, or an avenue to welfare; to a suburban culture where self, convenience, self-help, and pleasure are gods … and all where abortion is seen as a simple and quite acceptable option?  This is THE question often on my mind.  As I stand in front of an abortion center or create a social media post, or sit in a meeting … HOW CAN WE REACH the confused, broken, hardened, untouchable, churchless, and traumatized who are having abortions?  HOW CAN WE BE IN their world/culture/sphere WAY BEFORE pregnancy, abortion clinic appointment, abortion?  Be part of the answer… join a Pro-Life Union team. Praying for two moms who walked away from PA’s worst abortion center

The following is from Tom Stevens, the Director of the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia

Please pray!

Like Mary and Elizabeth …

As I was praying at Philadelphia Women’s Center (Pennsylvania’s worst abortion clinic) last Friday, two young girls came out of the abortion center and when they caught my eye, one asked if I was protesting.  I said, “I’m praying and I’m here to help.”  She said,  “I don’t want an abortion but I already have a two-year-old, and I don’t want to have a baby suffer.”  I said, “Everybody suffers, but everybody has a lot of wonderful moments in life, too.  I can’t solve all your problems, but I am here to help and we have a team of people who are ready to support you and your baby.”

When I asked how far along she was, she said, “Look, I’m 17 weeks.”  She lifted her jacket and showed me her belly.  There was no doubt.  I asked what she was doing here.  She said she and her sister were getting information about the ‘procedure’ and scheduling an abortion for Tuesday (tomorrow).  She said she wouldn’t go through with it.  Her sister, who is 10 weeks pregnant, said she wouldn’t do it either.  Praise God!

PLEASE PRAY that they stick with their intention to choose life.

Marlene Downing, Dir. of Hope Pregnancy Center, and Member of Pro-Life Union Board of Directors, is helping me in counseling them, searching for housing, and providing for material needs.

THIS IS A TIME of GRACE … even in the midst of the pandemic, shut-down, and the increased atmosphere of fear.  God is on the move.

Let’s all join in praying for great grace for moms discovering that they are pregnant right now … and pray for all those who are serving them.

Be at peace and know that the Lord is good.

A pro-life themed book is set to be released at the end of April.

The story of fiction is set in a futuristic 2060s that tells the story of what happens when we surrender our personal freedoms to fit a dictatorial technocracy. This regime even picks and chooses who can and cannot have children (Sound familiar?).

The book is set to be released in the coming days, but you are encouraged to order them now on Amazon.

As of today, it is available on paperback and kindle.

Small Rally Cut Short By Visit from Law Enforcement; Planned Parenthood Unhinged and Is Still Open

Though a small rally was planned with at least six people it was cut short.

Despite Pat’s efforts, the police department has ordered the disbandment of the less than ten people gathered for stream stations of the cross and prayer.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood continues to murder innocent children while the nation is in the middle of a pandemic.

In the meantime, the Catholic clergy is mainly silent. I can only imagine what it was like for Jesus when many of his closest friends abandoned him while he was journeying to Calvary.

Annual Stand Up for Life Dinner Set for November 22nd

The quarantine has put our lives on hold that we are at the point where we ask ourselves “Can we look forward to something?”

The answer is yes.

The annual Stand Up for Life Dinner will take place on Sunday, November 22nd. This year’s speaker is Matt Walsh (no relation to Fr. Chris Walsh of St. Raymond’s in Mt. Airy). Walsh is a writer for Daily Wire and an influential voice for conservatives. He hopes to use it as a platform to connect with his generation and beyond. More information will be available at a later date.

Matt Walsh was even one of the speakers from the rally against bullying last year outside of Planned Parenthood after videos of Brian Sims harassing pro-lifers surfaced. Listen to his speech here
