Pro-Life Summer Reading List

It is that time of the year where we all go to the beach, the mountains, take a flight to another city, picnic in the middle of nowhere, and going where the roads will lead us.

I have put together a top 10 (plus a few honorable mentions) pro-life summer reading list that can help keep promoting and learning from many pro-life heroes of the past while also polishing up on pro-life dialogue and also learning how to defend life form the moment conception until natural death.

Meanwhile, reading about how prominent pro-choice figures walked to the other side and build a culture of life. Not only did I include anti-abortion stories, but I have included books that cover every life issue. After all, we must be consistent if we are pro-life by remembering the marginalized, victims of war, immigrant, and even wrongly convicted criminals imprisoned and or on death row.

1) Persuasive Pro-Life Trent Horn

Published in 2014 and using his first-hand experience during campus visits, CatholicAnswers.com’s own Trent Horn shares first hand some of the dos and don’ts in engaging and challenging pro-choicers’ viewpoints.

2) Unplanned Abby Johnson

Once a rising star for Planned Parenthood, Abby Johnson saw firsthand a defenseless life being killed by an ultrasound-guided abortion in 2009. She recalled the times she saw volunteers for 40 Days for Life pray in front of her work at Bryan, TX. It would soon lead her to be a pro-life advocate and a Catholic convert.

3) Single Candles Brendan Lyons

West Chester, PA native Brendan Lyons writes a series of narratives from a chain of events that link several characters, all of whom demonstrate compassion and bravery in their commitment to the sanctity of life. In one piece, a senator defies his own political party; in another, a neonatal surgeon is asked to compromise her principles. Although the stories are fictional, the passion that informs the characters’ conviction is very real.

4) Rising with Roses Monique Ruberu

Dr. Monique Ruberu thought she was pro-life until she realized that she was prescribed birth control. Because of the help of many pro-lifers in Philadelphia, she reverted back to her Catholic faith and now promotes Natural Family Planning.

5) A Voice for Victoria: A memoir of healing from post-abortion trauma- Geraldine F Jacobs

A Voice for Victoria shares the author’s journey toward understanding how childhood messages and current events played a part in her abortion decision and path to healing from post-abortion trauma through God’s forgiveness.

6) The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia Neil Gorsuch

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch thoroughly assesses the strengths and weaknesses of leading contemporary ethical arguments for assisted suicide and euthanasia. He would argue against the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide while using Netherlands and Oregon as prime examples.

7) Johnny Got His Gun Dalton Trumbo

This anti-war novel, written in 1938, shares how a WWI soldier who wakes up from his hospital bed with no limbs and half destroyed face. After his wishes of showing the country of the horrors of wars, he reflects on the realities and myths of war.

8) All Quiet on the Western Front-  Erich Maria Remarque

A German veteran of WW1 recounts the physical and mental stress while fighting in the war. It also shares how to detach from civilian life they were following the war’s end.

9) Racketeer For Life Joe Scheidler

A former monk recalls his early involvement in the pro-life movement. He has debated media personalities, politicians, abortion workers, and even fought the culture of death at the Supreme Court.

10) Gosnell: The Untold Story of America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer- Ann McElhinney

Ann McElhinney details everything that happens inside of Kermit Gosnell’s house of horrors in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia. Even advocates on both sides were horrified at the heinous committed by the most notorious serial killer of the abortion industry.

Honorable mention:

Love Unleashes Life Stephanie Gray

Stephanie offers a fresh approach to abortion dialogue. This time reaching the heart and minds of abortion-minded people.

You Carried Me: A Daughter’s Memoir Melissa Ohden

Melissa Ohden shares first hand how she survived a saline abortion attempt. Learning at the age of fourteen, she went on a journey to search for her biological parents. She would soon have a change of heart.

Bernard Nathanson

Aborting America- shares how he changed his views on abortion.

The Hand of God- Dr. Nathanson hared how he found God and began promoting life after performing 61,000 abortions, including his own son.

The Anti-Mary Exposed: Rescuing the Culture from Toxic Femininity- Carrie Gress

It’s been 50 years, if not more since liberal feminism has given way to the slippery slope to our culture. The author exposes liberal feminism and how it has destroyed marriages, families, and even the use of sex.

40 Days for Life- David Bereit

Started as a small group outside of the Planned Parenthood in Bryan, TX, this life-changing endeavor recalls how it has converted workers, changed hearts, and shut the doors of abortion facilities with prayer, love, and fasting.

Humanae Vitae- Pope Paul VI

Written in 1968 and celebrating over 50 years, the encyclical Humanae Vitae is an eye-opening read written by Pope Paul VI as he foretells the repercussions of a society that accepts sexual promiscuity, abortion-on-demand, and artificial birth control.

Hard list to put together, for sure. However, there are many pro-life books to read such as anything written by Scott Klusendorf, Ron Paul, Fr. Frank Pavone, Janet Morena, Janet Smith and so many more.

After Unplanned: The Walls are Talking (Abby Johnson talks with former abortion workers) Webinar

*** The following is from an email blast sent out by Former Planned Parenthood Director, now Pro-Life Advocate, Abby Johnson. The intention of the repost is to promote upcoming pro-life events and to better equip ourselves in engaging our culture in the abortion debate.

UNPLANNED, the surprise hit film based on the book I wrote (of the same name, after I quit my job at Planned Parenthood) shook the nation as people were confronted with the truth about abortion. Many people, even those who are pro-life, didn’t know how horrific abortion was or the devastating effects it has wreaked on children, women, and their families. I received hundreds of personal messages about how UNPLANNED changed their views on abortion – and how they viewed those who worked in the industry, just like I did.
UNPLANNED only showed a small portion of what it looks like to work in the abortion industry. But it also showed how love and compassion can help workers quit their jobs and leave the industry entirely. Many of their stories are told in my second book, The Walls Are Talking.

Join me on TUESDAY, MAY 21 at 7:30pm EDT and four former abortion workers to learn:

– how their stories are changing the face of the pro-life movement,
– the secrets of the abortion industry, and
– how abortion clinics are dealing with the exodus of so many workers.

I will introduce you to these four courageous former workers:

– Sue Thayer – Sue was a Center Manager for Planned Parenthood for 18 years. After she became pro-life, Sue led the first-ever 40 Days for Life campaign outside the very clinic she managed.

– Monica Cline – Monica was trained by Planned Parenthood for outreach to teens and saw first-hand that the goals were more abortion-centered than they were education-based.

– Adrienne Moton – Adrienne is a former employee of Women’s Medical Center, the infamous Kermit Gosnell’s practice. She worked in the abortion industry for 3 years.

– Myra Neyer – Myra worked for Planned Parenthood in Baltimore. She witnessed an unforgettable abortion procedure that led to her quitting her job in the industry.

Participants will be entered into a random drawing to receive an autographed copy of my book, The Walls are Talking.
It can also be ordered by CLICKING HERE.

I hope you will join me on May 21. These walls are talking, and it’s time we all listen.

Recap on Daily Vigils, Weekly Sidewalk Servants Sign-Up

Deb was at 777 appletree last Saturday praying to end abortion and handing out blessing bags… A young Spanish speaking girl approached the building. Deb spoke to her in Spanish and offered her help. The girl expressed that she would rather get help than end her pregnancy. Deb contacted the Community Women’s Center instantly and set her up for an appointment on Monday. Then she picked her up on Monday and took her to the appointment. At the appointment, this beautiful girl was loved and supported, and now she is definitely choosing life. If Deb was not there… if that hour was empty… if that young girl never encountered her and never learned about the help available… she would likely be mourning instead of rejoicing and preparing for her child.

You make the difference! Please be there to pray and offer help to these women and babies who need us… Let’s fill every hour this week! let us know if you need instructions before you go.

Former PP Worker, Now Pro-Life Outreach Coordinator, Shares Her Testimony

Sue Thayer

100 pro-lifers gathered outside the largest Planned Parenthood in the Greater Philadelphia area to hear what happened during her time a manager of Planned Parenthood in Iowa.

She shares firsthand what happens inside of Planned Parenthood facilities across the nation and world. Unlike Abby Johnson, she ran an abortion facility longer than her. What does make them parallel to each other is their correlation with their experiences.

Sue Thayer to Visit Philly/Allentown/Jersey Areas

The following is an email from Chris Davis who is a strategist for 40 Days for Life. He has alert that Sue Thayer, a former abortion provider in Iowa, will be in the area. I know many pro-lifers will learn how she stopped taking lives and now works with others to save lives. It will also plant the seeds for any of the abortion workers to one day walk away from Planned Parenthood.

We are very excited about Sue Thayer’s Philadelphia/New Jersey visits! She’s looking forward to joining all of you and plans to keep the following schedule:

Sue will also be delighted to share a meal with you and your team, to meet with any local pro-life or church leaders as may be helpful to you, and to conduct media interviews as possible.

We urge you and your team to make some advance preparations to help ensure that this visit is as useful for you and your campaign as possible. Here are our recommendations:

Request Media Coverage

  1. Create a list of local media that might consider covering your event. Include both secular and Christian television programs, radio programs, newspapers, magazines, and even blogs.
  1. Update and email the attached press release to the media on your list, to your participants, and to other organizations that might want to participate.
  1. Consider following your press release with a phone call the next day.
  1. Please take high-resolution photographs (at very least 1MB). A smartphone is all you need for this! Group photos are great! But please take some “action shots” too. Photograph people praying and holding signs. Photograph hands, feet, close-ups of faces. Photograph the abortion facility where you are praying or whatever you think tells the story. Consider enlisting a college student to do this! Send those photos to steve.karlen@40daysforlife.com.

Other Tips and Suggestions

  • Use the attached speaker biography and picture to promote the event.
  • Effective strategies for increasing event attendance include direct phone calling, bulk email, email messages to individuals and social media.
  • Arrange for someone to take pictures of the visit for local and national use.

We’ll be praying for you and your team.

Unplanned Matters

UnplannedArchbishop Charles Chaput weighs in on the importance of the movie that everyone should see, Unplanned.

Here’s an excerpt from his latest column:

A friend of mine, a mother and teacher, has spent the last 40 years caring for young people: her hundreds of grade-school students, her children, and her many grandchildren. She’s spent those same 40 years volunteering in the cause of life. Over the decades she’s helped open 11 pro-life clinics; led and served on the boards of pro-life organizations; marched and picketed; given public talks; and spent hundreds of hours on the phone and in person listening to and trying to help women faced with the crisis of an unplanned pregnancy.

She once told me that, in her view, the two biggest rackets in American culture are the mob, whose profits are fat but its activities criminal, and Planned Parenthood, whose funding is fat but its activities praised. She has her own personal memory of the latter. As a young woman early in her marriage, and before the direction of her life changed, she sought out birth control counseling and pills from a Planned Parenthood clinic in Manhattan. She got what she came for — and left feeling processed “like a piece of meat.”

She’s never forgotten the experience. Planned Parenthood has worked earnestly to improve its customer service and public relations in the years since, but the essence of what it does hasn’t changed any more than the mob’s has. In practice, the business of Planned Parenthood is to prevent new life and to help kill developing life if it becomes inconvenient. And too many women to count have been damaged or repelled by it.

One of those women, one who has not remained silent, is Abby Johnson. As director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, and committed to the ideals of reproductive choice and a woman’s “right to choose,” Johnson oversaw a site that conducted thousands of abortions during her tenure. It was only when she took part personally in one of the procedures that the reality of killing a living, developing, unborn human child imprinted itself on her conscience full force. She left Planned Parenthood and joined the Coalition for Life.

Johnson’s journey from one side of the abortion struggle to the other is told powerfully in her compelling book Unplanned, available from Ignatius Press and other booksellers. It’s well worth reading and sharing. And her story is now an equally powerful motion picture, Unplanned, opening in theaters around the metro Philadelphia area on March  29.

Don’t expect to see positive reviews in mainstream media outlets; miracles do happen, but this one would be a stretch. Ignore that. See this movie, and bring as many friends and acquaintances with you as you can (it’s rated R for the nature of its content). It’s that important.

Note that Generation Life is hosting an advance screening of the film in South Philadelphia on March 28, with details here

Against all predictions and odds, the pro-life movement has endured and gained ground over the past four decades because the humanity of the unborn child can’t finally be hidden or denied. The right to life is the fundamental human right; without it, no other rights are secure. Abby Johnson discovered that in a hard but deeply moving way. In supporting the film that tells her story, we join in the task of communicating the sanctity of life.

Loving One Another

The following is from an email sent out by Dr. Monique Ruberu.

When we can look into the eyes of every person. EVERY single person, and appreciate them for who they are, their beauty, their capacity to love AND love them all despite their views, their beliefs, the color of their skin, how kind or unkind they have been to us… then we know we are really doing HIS work.

Standing on the sidewalk may seem daunting or scary to some of you, but consider this:  While you are present for that hour. What if you were to understand that every person there… those passing by, those walking in and out of the abortion center, those standing as an escort… imagine them all as an extension of you.  They are our brothers and sisters created by God. They are flesh and blood just like you and me.

Then wouldn’t we WANT to be there? Wouldn’t we want to be the person that shares with them that they are loved, they are honored, they have access through our community to a new life, a new support system, a new community.  Wouldn’t we want every person to know that we LOVE them so much because as different as they may look, or sound, or dress, we can see ourselves in them? Wouldn’t we want them to know that even if they chose to do something that we were so saddened by, we could STILL be there to love them and show them kindness and compassion?

If we are not there, nobody will be there to show them.

If we are not there, nobody will be there to pray for these beautiful people.

If we are not there, we have ZERO chance of impacting their lives and the lives of the unborn babies at all.

So LET’S BE THERE! Let us stand in a state of love and compassion. Offering everything we possibly can to give support to the people who are involved in ending the lives of OUR family.  Let us look them in the eyes.. deep into their eyes and connect with them… let us let them know they are important, seen, and LOVED. Let’s band together to MOVE mountains, let’s create the impossible and be the key to transforming the lives of these men and women in need.

Friends, it’s so much more than standing in the cold for an hour. It’s doing everything we can to save our OWN flesh and blood. Our own brothers and sisters that have been created by OUR FATHER. This is NOT an option. I need all of you to do this.. we can’t afford to lose any more of our people.

I love you all and am deeply grateful for the sacrifices you have made to participate thus far. I have complete confidence that each and every one of you will step up and be present more than you have ever thought possible.

God bless,

Dr. Monique
